Building Cultural Bridges Through Traditional Games: Our “Five Stones” Activity

On Tuesday, April 8th, as part of our eTwinning project, we came together with our partners from Turkey, Serbia, Romania, Greece, and Poland through the ESEP platform. During this online meeting, we decided to choose a traditional game that would offer children an enjoyable and educational experience. Together, we selected Five Stones, a game that carries traces of the past and is an important part of cultural heritage.

Following our decision, all partners played the game with their students and uploaded their activities to ESEP by April 19th. For the children in Turkey, the game was somewhat familiar from the past, but they still faced a few challenges while playing. This, however, allowed them to recall memories from their childhood while also developing their motor skills. For the partner countries, it was a completely new experience. Their students were excited to learn a traditional game from another culture and enjoyed the learning process while sharing it with their classmates.

This activity once again highlighted the value of traditional games and helped build a cultural bridge among children from different countries. It was a wonderful example of learning through play — one game, five countries, and countless smiles!

I LEARN MY PAST AND GROW WITH ITS GAMES

Dear Parents,
In the age of technology, the intense interest of our children in digital games has led to the gradual disappearance of traditional games. As a result, it can negatively affect not only their physical health but also their social interactions and their connection to cultural heritage. To help our children regain these values, we aim to support their physical and social development through a project we are about to launch.

In our project, we have the participation of teachers from various schools:

❖ Pınar Çelik, Merve Subaşı from Başakşehir Nene Hatun Primary School, Türkiye

❖ Ezgi Topsöğüt, Burçin Birel Eyigün from Suzan Tuna Primary School, Türkiye

❖ Banu Kayalı from Şehit Muhammed Eymen Demirci Primary School, Türkiye

❖ Nüzhet Dilman from 80. Yıl Özel İdare  Primary School, Türkiye

❖ Aynzelha KAÇAN from Tepe Primary School, Türkiye

Below, we are sharing further details about the project and its process.

Project Process

StartDate:March2025
End Date: June 2025

This project, covering a period of just under four months between March and June, is specifically designed to enable our students to learn and apply many different disciplines. Throughout the project, various group games will be implemented to support the social and sensory development of the students.

Objectives Of  The  Project
Our project aims to provide a fun and enriching learning environment for children through traditional games. The main goals we have identified are:

1. Supporting cognitive and social skill development: Traditional games are effective in developing attention, focus, and problem-solving skills. They also support children in working as a team and collaborating.

2. Improving English language proficiency: Various activities throughout the project will be conducted with English support, contributing to the improvement of children's language skills.

3. Discovering common values: Through games from different regions, students will explore the common human aspects around the world.

4. Emphasizing cultural richness: By learning the games from different cultures, our children will have the opportunity to understand the values that geographical differences add to our cultural heritage.

5. Promoting collaborative work: Activities will be planned to develop the spirit of teamwork among students.

6. Supporting physical development and improving balance control: The aim is to increase children's physical activity and strengthen their motor skills through active games.

Expected Outcomes Of The Project
By the end of this project, the expected outcomes for our children are:
• Awareness of different cultures: By learning games played in different places, children will feel part of a global civilization.
• Discovery of commonalities: They will recognize similarities among children worldwide, regardless of geographical distances.
• Development of foreign language skills: English-supported activities will help improve the students' language development.
• Active participation in project activities: Children will be encouraged to not only observe but also actively participate.
• Gaining collaboration and teamwork habits: Students will be expected to engage in team activities and create a collective product.
• Healthy development through physical activity: Traditional games will contribute to the physical health of children.
• Improved balance and coordination: Activities that strengthen motor skills will boost their self-confidence and agility.

Your Support is Very Important
Dear parents, it is our collective responsibility to help our children step away from digital screens and integrate more with our social and cultural values. Through this project, we are offering children not just fun, but also opportunities to learn and share. With your active support, we believe our children will derive maximum benefit from these experiences.
Your suggestions and contributions are of great importance to us. Together, we can help our children establish sustainable cultural connections. Please don't hesitate to share your thoughts and feedback with us!
